The papers contain correspondence, records and other papers, photographs and clippings pertaining to the operation of the Charlottesville, Va., Dept. of Parks and Recreation. The majority were kept by Nannie Burwell Crow, dept. director for 29 years. Albums and scrapbooks contain over 300 photographs of events sponsored by the Charlottesville Dept. of Parks and Recreation, including some of events in Washington Park, the city's park for African Americans during the years of segregation. Minutes and correspondence of the Recreation Advisory Board concerns the daily business of the dept., budget concerns, capital improvements, and special recommendations. The collection also contains clippings, miscellaneous printed materials, plans and a thesis "An investigation for the design of a community recreation building for Charlottesville, Virginia" by Samuel Edward Darnell.
